Were the Gospels really contrived in the Fourth Century?

After the DaVinci code came out, lots of people came up with the idea that the Gospels were written in the Fourth Century. I have talked to people who are sure of this. Yet, I found something interesting as I was reading my ‘Apologetics Bible’ this morning. A note in the book of Matthew explained that although the name of Matthew is not mentioned in this Gospel, giving credence to his authorship, around the year 180 A.D., Irenaeus had recognized Matthew as the author of this Gospel. Obviously, the Gospel had already made its way around the known world then, and this was not in the Fourth century.
