Is Mormonism Just Like Biblical Christianity?

There are many different approaches in apologetics and this one is different than the normal science/history type of apologetics. I have had at least three personal encounters with Mormons which I find very interesting. I recently had another encounter on my other blog page on History at . All of these encounters have led me to believe that either Mormons really do believe that their belief system is exactly like the belief system in the Bible, or, they are using a deceptive method to try to make me believe that both the Mormons and Biblical Christianity are the same thing (with the hopes of my becoming a Mormon, I’m sure).

The first encounter was at my door, years ago. A young Mormon man was telling me that he believed we need to be born again. There seemed to be much agreement with what he was telling me he believed in, and the Bible. But not too long into the conversation, he did bring up the Bible verse that says ‘Faith without works is dead’ meaning that we have to continue our salvation with good works.

The second encounter was with a man who was a nominal Mormon, but still wanted to hold on to his Mormon beliefs. He really seemed sincere and perhaps God really was working in his heart. He saw himself as a sinner and appeared convicted. But a couple of times he expressed a belief that Joseph Smith really does believe the same things that Christianity teaches. He seemed to have a great respect for Joseph Smith as being a valid prophet.

The third encounter was in Walmart. Once again, it appeared that the guy really ‘got’ the Gospel. He admitted he was a sinner in need of a Savior, and trusted in Jesus for his salvation. Again, everything sounded like he really understood the Gospel, until a couple of minutes later he expressed the belief that salvation was continued by works. So, here we go again.

The latest encounter was on my other blog page. I had written a post about what happened this day in History. What happened that day was the Mormon Church began. After I wrote the little article on this ‘church’s’ beginnings, I followed with the Bible verse that says, “If we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other Gospel than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” There was a response from a nameless person who said that what Joseph Smith believed in was the same message that the Bible teaches.

So, with that in mind, I have a question for you. Do Mormons really believe the same thing as what the Bible teaches? Here is another question. If Lucifer is supposed to be Jesus’ brother (according to Mormon teaching) wouldn’t that violate John 3:16 which states that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have eternal life? Doesn’t it say in the verse that God has only one son, not two? If Lucifer were Jesus’ brother, wouldn’t that mean that God the Father would be Lucifer’s father as well? Now that is something to ponder!

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us…”

“For by grace are you saved through faith, it is a gift from God; not of works lest any man should boast”

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ”

“For if righteousness comes by the Law, then Christ died in vain”
